Gyms and fitness centers

Local SEO for gyms and fitness centers.

A member is worth around $1,900 and January decides how many of them you get. Holding the top three map pack positions when that surge lands is worth more than any campaign you can run once it has started.

$1,900
value of one member at $80 a month across a 24 month tenure
$67.36
cost per lead on Google Ads, up from $62.80 the year before
14.29%
fitness conversion rate on Meta, the highest of any category
6.8%
conversion rate on paid search, so ranked traffic converts hard
The money

Twenty members a month, and what they are worth

Gym economics are unusually clean, because a member is a subscription rather than a transaction.

Member value at $80 a month over 24 months$1,900
Cost per lead on paid search$67.36
Leads per join, at roughly 1 in 4~$270
Twenty joins a month from the map pack$38,000in member value
Same twenty bought through ads, monthly$5,400recurring, and rising

Cost per lead went up 7% in a year. Your ranking position does not do that.

Paid works for gyms and you should run it. But the lead price is set by whoever else is bidding in your postcode, it climbs every January exactly when you need it most, and it resets to nothing the day you pause. A map pack position is the part of your acquisition that competitors cannot outbid you for overnight.

Assumes a $1,900 member value and one join per four leads. Studios charging $150 or more a month with longer tenures should run this with their own numbers, because the case gets considerably stronger.

The calendar

The year runs in three phases and only one of them is January

Every gym owner knows this cycle. Very few time their marketing against it, which is why January is won in September.

September to December

Build the position

The quiet months are when rankings are actually won. Profile work, review velocity and coverage all take weeks to register, so this is the window that decides January.

January to February

Collect the surge

Demand arrives regardless of what you do. Your share of it was decided months ago by where you sit in the map pack when the searches start.

March onward

Hold and retain

New joins fall away and retention decides the year. Ranking keeps producing a steady trickle of replacements at no additional cost per member.

Where the money goes

Meta persuades. Search catches people already decided.

Two channels, two jobs. The mistake is treating them as alternatives.

Meta, cost per click
$0.46 to $1.10
Google Ads, cost per click
$5.00
Google Ads, cost per lead
$67.36
Map pack position
fixed monthly
Meta is cheaper per click and converts higher because it creates the intent. Search is more expensive because the intent already exists, which is also why it books. The map pack is the only line here that does not scale up with the number of members you win.
What we do

The work that fills a gym floor

01

Google Business Profile that shows the actual gym

Correct category, class types listed as services, current opening hours including public holidays, and photographs of your real floor, real equipment and real members. Stock fitness photography is the fastest way to look like a chain nobody chose.

02

Pricing visible without a form

The single most common conversion leak in this trade. A ready buyer who cannot find a price returns to the map pack and taps the next gym. Publishing rates loses you nothing and wins you the comparison.

03

Class and discipline pages that rank separately

Yoga, HIIT, strength, boxing, reformer pilates and personal training are separate searches with separate competitors. One membership page cannot rank for all of them, and the class terms are usually far easier to win.

04

Coverage across the radius people will commute to

A gym is chosen on the route between home and work, not on absolute distance. We measure position across the suburbs that realistically feed you and close the gaps rather than reporting a single flattering number.

05

Review velocity built in the quiet months

Reviews order the map pack and decide which of three gyms a stranger walks into. Volume built through autumn is what puts you top three in January, so the request process goes in long before the surge.

06

A timetable that does not require an app download

Prospective members want to know if the 6am class exists before they commit to anything. Hiding the timetable behind a signup wall costs joins every week.

How we work

The first 90 days on a gym

  1. Days 1 to 30

    Audit and foundations

Profile and citation audit, ranking measured across your catchment, categories and class services corrected, and an honest assessment of whether your pricing and timetable are currently visible.

  2. Days 31 to 60

    Coverage and conversion

Class and discipline pages built, pricing surfaced, mobile join path shortened, review request process installed.

  3. Days 61 to 90

    Authority and velocity

Citations and local links, profile posting, review volume compounding ahead of the seasonal window.

  4. Ongoing

    Time it against the calendar

Everything finished before the autumn window closes, so the position is held rather than built when January demand actually arrives.

Common questions

Local SEO for gyms, answered

Our sign ups all come in January. Does ranking change that?

It does not change when people decide to join, and anyone promising otherwise is selling you something. What it changes is your share of a fixed surge. January demand arrives whether you are ready or not, so the whole question is whether you hold the top three positions when it lands. Ranking work started in December arrives too late to matter, which is the single most expensive timing mistake in this trade.

Should we be spending on Meta instead of ranking?

Meta is genuinely strong for gyms. Fitness has the highest conversion rate on the platform at 14.29% and clicks run between $0.46 and $1.10, far below Google. Run it. The distinction is intent: Meta interrupts someone scrolling and persuades them, search catches someone who has already decided this week is the week. You want both, and the search side is the one that does not stop when the budget does.

What is a member actually worth?

At $80 a month across an average 24 month tenure, roughly $1,900. Against a Google Ads cost per lead around $67, the model works comfortably even before you count personal training, retail or the members they bring with them. The uncomfortable part is that the same $67 recurs for every member forever, and it has been rising: cost per lead moved from $62.80 to $67.36 year on year.

We are a small independent competing with a chain. Is this winnable?

In the map pack, yes, more often than in paid. Chains have budgets you cannot match but they frequently run weak individual location profiles, thin local content and stale review positions because everything routes through a head office. Proximity and review velocity are the two heaviest local signals and both are things a single site operator can win outright.

What actually converts a gym search into a walk in?

Photos of your real floor, real members and real classes, current pricing that does not require a form submission, and a class timetable that is visible without downloading an app. The most common conversion killer we see is a gym ranking well and then hiding its prices, which sends a ready buyer straight back to the map pack to try the next listing.

January is decided in September. Where are you now?

We will measure where your gym ranks across its catchment, compare your review position against the gyms currently above you, and tell you what it would take to hold top three before the surge.
