Moving companies
Local SEO for moving companies.
A broker lead is sold to three movers at once, so you quote against two rivals before you have finished reading it. A customer who finds you in the map pack found you alone. That difference shows up in margin, not just volume.
- ~$1,100
- average move value, with long distance jobs at $2,500 and up
- ~$300
- what you can afford per lead at a 25% close rate
- $40 to $100
- what a moving lead actually costs in most markets
- May to Sept
- when the season lands, and when it is far too late to start
What a booked move can justify
The arithmetic works. The problem is where the leads come from, not what they cost.
| Average move value | $1,200 |
|---|---|
| Close rate on qualified enquiries | 25% |
| So affordable cost per lead | ~$300 |
| Typical market cost per lead | $40 to $100 |
| Healthy cost per booked move | $150 to $300 |
A shared lead and an exclusive lead cost about the same. They are not worth the same.
Broker leads land in three inboxes at once and the job goes to whoever discounts fastest. A map pack enquiry arrives with no competing quote attached, which is why movers who build ranking consistently report better margin on the same number of jobs. The lead price was never the real problem.
Assumes a $1,200 average move and a 25% close rate. Long distance operators should run this at $2,500 and a lower close rate, where the affordable lead cost rises considerably.
Summer is decided in January
Moving is one of the most brutally seasonal trades there is, and ranking cannot be bought in a hurry.
January to March
Build quietly
The dead months are when positions are actually won. Profile work, coverage and review velocity all take weeks to register, and there is time to do them properly.
April to May
The booking window opens
Customers research and book four to eight weeks before the move. Whoever holds the map pack now takes the enquiries for the entire peak.
June to September
Run the trucks
Paid lead prices peak exactly when demand does. Every job that came from a ranking position rather than a broker is margin you keep.
The work that fills a moving schedule
Local and long distance treated as separate businesses
A $900 local move and a $2,500 interstate move have different searchers, different decision timelines and different competitors. Splitting them is usually the fastest gain available, because almost no moving site does it properly.
Google Business Profile built for a nervous customer
Correct categories, every service listed including packing, storage and piano or specialty moves, licensing and insurance visible, service areas matching where you genuinely operate, and photographs of your real crew and trucks.
Coverage across both ends of the move
People search from where they live now and from where they are going. Ranking only in your home city means missing every inbound customer relocating toward you, which is often the higher value half of the market.
Review velocity as reputation defence
This is an industry customers approach with suspicion because of stories they have read. Recent detailed reviews do more conversion work here than in almost any other trade, and they feed the ranking signal at the same time.
Specialty services made visible
Piano moving, office relocation, senior downsizing, storage and packing all carry better margin and thinner competition than the term movers near me. Most companies offer them and rank for none of them.
A quote path that works in ninety seconds
Click to call above the fold and a short enquiry form, not a fourteen field inventory. Customers request three quotes and the first company that responds properly wins a disproportionate share.
Run this before the season starts
Six checks against your own profile. Every one is a common reason a good mover sits below a broker aggregator.
- 01
Do you rank in the suburbs people move FROM?
Not just where your depot is. Outbound customers search from their current address, which is often nowhere near you.
- 02
Are packing, storage and specialty listed?
As individual services on the profile. If they are not there you cannot appear when someone searches them specifically.
- 03
Is your licensing visible immediately?
Licence and insurance details above the fold. Customers have read the horror stories and are actively looking for this.
- 04
How many reviews this quarter?
Recency matters more than total in a trade where customers are checking whether you are still trustworthy today.
- 05
How fast do you respond to an enquiry?
Customers request three quotes. Response speed decides a large share of who wins, regardless of price.
- 06
Do your photos show your own trucks?
Branded trucks and named crew. Stock moving imagery reads as a broker rather than an operator.
Four searches, two of them worth far more than the others
| Search type | What they type | Where their head is at | Priority |
|---|---|---|---|
| Long distance | interstate movers, long distance moving company [city] to [city] | Researched over weeks, decided on trust. $2,500 and up. | Highest |
| Specialty | piano movers, office relocation, senior downsizing services | Specific need, few competitors, better margin. | High |
| Local move | movers near me, local moving company [suburb] | Price and availability driven, decided quickly. | High |
| Urgent | last minute movers, same day movers, emergency moving service | Deadline driven and least price sensitive. Clicks run $20 and up. | Medium |

Local SEO for moving companies, answered
We buy leads from a broker. Why change?
Broker leads are sold to three or four movers simultaneously, which means you are competing on price within minutes of the enquiry arriving and your close rate reflects that. A customer who finds you in the map pack has found you alone. That is the difference between quoting against two rivals and quoting against nobody, and it usually shows up in margin rather than volume.
What can we afford to pay for a lead?
If your average move brings in around $1,200 and you close a quarter of qualified enquiries, you can pay up to about $300 a lead and still be profitable. Most markets deliver leads at $40 to $100, and a healthy cost per booked move sits between $150 and $300. The economics are workable. The problem is that the price rises every May and never falls back.
How seasonal is moving, really?
Extreme. Something close to half of all moves happen between May and September, and demand collapses through winter. Rankings take weeks to build, so the operators who own summer built their positions in January and February. Starting in April means paying peak prices for paid leads during the only months that matter.
Should we rank for local moves or long distance?
They are separate businesses wearing one name. A local move is roughly $900 and is decided on price and availability within a few miles. A long distance move is $2,500 or more, is researched for weeks, and is decided on trust and reviews. One page cannot serve both and most moving sites try, which is why they convert badly for the high value job.
Why do reviews matter so much in moving?
Because the customer is handing everything they own to strangers with a truck, and the industry has a reputation problem that every customer has read about. Recent, detailed reviews are the single largest conversion factor in this trade. They also feed the prominence signal that orders the map pack, so the same work pays twice.
Stop quoting against two other movers on the same lead.
We will measure where you rank at both ends of your typical move, review your position against the aggregators currently above you, and show you what an exclusive enquiry stream would take.
