What Is the Best Channel for Local SEO Backlinks?

Not all backlinks help local rankings equally. Here's which channels actually move the needle for a local business, and which ones are a waste of time.

Backlinks still matter for local SEO, but not all of them matter the same amount. A single link from your local chamber of commerce can outweigh a dozen generic directory submissions. Here's which channels actually move a local business's rankings, ranked by what's realistically worth your time.

Why relevance beats raw authority for local SEO

A link from a national news site sounds impressive, but if it has nothing to do with your city or your industry, it does less for local rankings than a smaller, genuinely relevant one. Google's local algorithm weighs prominence, and prominence is judged partly by how connected a business is to its actual community, not just how many links point at it.

The channels worth investing in

  1. 01Local sponsorships and partnerships: sponsoring a youth sports team, a local event, or a community fundraiser often earns a link from the organizer's website, tied directly to your city.
  2. 02Chambers of commerce and business associations: most have a member directory with a real, indexed link. Low effort, high relevance.
  3. 03Local press and journalism: a mention in local news carries real weight, and it's more attainable than people think if you have an actual story (an opening, an award, a local angle).
  4. 04Industry-specific directories: Avvo for lawyers, Healthgrades for clinicians, Angi for home services. Niche relevance signals context Google can use.
  5. 05Supplier and partner websites: if you work with other local businesses, ask whether either of you links to the other. This is often just an email away.

What about generic, high-authority directories?

Sites like Yelp, Foursquare, and the Better Business Bureau still matter, but treat them as citations, not link-building. They're a baseline every local business needs, not a growth channel. See our citations guide for how to build that foundation properly.

The best local backlink is one that would exist even if Google didn't. A real sponsorship, a real partnership, a real mention. Everything else is just noise Google has gotten very good at ignoring.

How many backlinks does a local business actually need?
There's no magic number. A handful of genuinely relevant, local links will usually outperform hundreds of generic ones. Focus on relevance over volume.
Do social media links count as backlinks?
Most social platforms use nofollow links, so they don't pass the same ranking signal directly. They still drive real traffic and visibility though, which indirectly helps.
Is guest posting still worth it for local SEO?
Only if the site is genuinely relevant to your industry or your area. A generic guest post on an unrelated blog does very little for local rankings.
