Local Citations: Why NAP Consistency Still Moves Rankings

Citations feel old-school, but consistent business listings across the web remain a core local ranking signal. Here's what to build, where, and how to keep it clean.

A citation is any place on the web that mentions your business's name, address, and phone number (NAP). Directories, chambers of commerce, industry listings, even a mention without a link counts. They're unglamorous, but consistent citations still tell Google your business is real, established, and located where you say it is.

Why citations still matter

Citations feed the prominence factor of local ranking, and NAP consistency validates your distance and identity signals. When dozens of trusted sources agree on your details, Google trusts them too.

The citations every business needs

  • The big data aggregators & platforms: Google, Apple Maps, Bing Places, Facebook.
  • General directories: Yelp, Yellow Pages, Better Business Bureau, Foursquare.
  • Industry-specific directories: e.g. Avvo for lawyers, Healthgrades for clinicians, Angi for home services.
  • Local & niche sources: your chamber of commerce, local news, and community sites.

Clean up before you build

Before adding new listings, fix what's already out there. Old addresses, a previous phone number, or duplicate profiles actively hurt you. Audit, correct, and merge duplicates first. Then build.

Most local businesses don't have a citation problem. They have a consistency problem: the same business described five different ways.

Do citations still work in 2026?
Yes. Their weight has settled over the years, but NAP consistency remains a baseline trust signal. Think of them as table stakes: they won't win the game alone, but you can't win without them.
Do I need a link from each citation?
No. Unlinked mentions still count as citations. A link is a bonus, but consistent NAP data is the point.
How does this connect to the local pack?
Citations build the prominence that helps you enter the local pack, and they reinforce the profile work in our GBP checklist.
